Come sun, come rain, it is always fun to be by the river and this September the River Thames is set to have a lot to offer. This is the month long Totally Thames Festival. Book any of the nearby serviced apartments London and try out an underground concert amid the depths of Tower Bridge, take part in an archaeological river tour, visit an exhibition, watch boat races – and that’s only a small sample of what is on offer.
Totally Thames sets out to show the sheer breadth of activity and interests involved in this historic river. Boat racing is inevitable given the sheer size and length of this wonderful river.
The Great River Race will undoubtedly attract large numbers of spectators. Book a stay at Presidential Apartments Kensington and head for the river banks especially on the South Bank and Embankment for the best views of the passing vessels, or head down to Ham for the finishing line. Equally good views can be enjoyed from all the various bridges over the Thames starting from Tower Bridge. The Great River Race is the equivalent of the London Marathon! Teams have to row 21.6 miles from London Docklands to Ham in Surrey. Around 300 teams are already set to take part in this years race, with participants coming from all over the world. Expect top rowers to be taking part keen to achieve the fastest time, while many other participants are aiming to raise as much for charity as possible and are likely to be attempting the race in fancy dress or undertaking colourful stunts during the race.
Taking part in one of the many archaeological guided walks along the river bank is a great way to discover the history of this great river. As this is a tidal river, it is not wise to try and walk along the river on your own. Following a guide allows you to access the river safely and see bits of London you might not otherwise be able to do so. Depending on location and river height, you may be able to spot the remains of Roman or medieval wharfs, see mudlarks at work hunting for treasures unearthed by the action of the river. Some of the walks even take in the area immediately below the Tower of London.
Alternatively, listen to story telling inspired by the myths of the River Danube, see an exhibition of river inspired artwork, try wild swimming in an escorted `group down in Hammersmith, discover the work of Brunel and his amazing river tunnel, or discover votive offerings given to the river gods.
