London is renowned as a centre of the art world. Not only does it have an amazing collection of high profile museums, but top galleries and auction houses like Sothebys and Christies. Not surprisingly, it has become the venue for countless art fairs involving dealers and buyers from all over the world.
One of the greatest of those art fairs takes place at the end of June. The Masterpieces Art Fair is expected to attract over 40,000 people, some looking to buy while many others are keen to see incredible works of art that may not be seen in public again. Held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, visiting the fair is also a way to see inside a building not normally open to the public. For the best access to the Fair and a soothing night’s sleep, stay at the any of the nearby and affordable yet luxury serviced apartments London.
This is an exhibition containing much more than paintings. On display – and available for purchase – will be rare books, exquisite jewellery, sculpture, treasures from the distant past and furniture. These are all museum quality objects sourced from over 160 international exhibitors. Agnews, Robilant & Voena, Landou Fine Art, Lullo Pampoulides, Hauser & Worth and the Hammer Galleries are just some of the many exhibitors who will be taking part.
On display will be works of art by Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro as well as a celebration of the tercentenary of legendary furniture manufacturer Thomas Chippendale. Around 20 items made by Chippendale will be on show. There is contemporary Aboriginal Art, clocks and watches, coins and beautiful porcelain to be seen.
For jewellery connoisseurs, there are stunning examples of medieval and renaissance jewellery, Art Deco items as well as contemporary pieces by Van Cleef & Arpels, Boghossian and Cindy Chao.
It is also a great place to learn. Many of the exhibitors will be holding regular Stand Talks lasting just 15 to 20 minutes at a time, while academics and graduates from Sotheby’s Institute of Art will be offering 30 minute highlight tours around the Fair. With items on display from right up to modern day, it is an opportunity to discover current trends, and styles that are coming to the forefront of attention.
